2009-04-03: Gunman fires 98 shots, kills 13 people in Binghamton, New York

The man who shot and killed 13 people in Binghamton last week fired at least 98 times in a swift but calculated rampage that lasted barely a minute, Binghamton officials said on Wednesday.

The man, Jiverly Wong, burst into the American Civic Association center on Friday morning carrying a .45-caliber handgun and a 9-millimeter Beretta. In rapid succession, Mr. Wong gunned down 17 people — 13 of whom died almost instantly and four of whom survived — before killing himself.

Mr. Wong fired 87 shots from the Beretta and 11 from the .45-caliber gun, hitting most of the victims between four and seven times each, said Andrew Block, a spokesman for the city, citing a ballistics report released on Wednesday.
