A Cobb County school bus filled with McCleskey Middle School students on their way to visit the King Center was rear-ended by another Cobb school bus Friday morning on the 14th Street exit of I-75. No one was injured seriously, said school district spokesman Jay Dillon.
Six students who complained of soreness were transported to Scottish Rite Childrens Hospital as a precautionary measure, Dillon said. Two buses were sent to bring the students back to school following the incident, Dillon said.
About 10 North Cobb High School students skipped school Friday for some fun in the sun at Lake Allatoona.
Two of them never made it back.
Divers recovered the bodies of the victims —males, ages 15 and 18— from the Bartow County lake about 2:15 p.m. They had drowned while trying to swim across a 100-yard channel, about 25 yards from a rocky shoreline, said Bartow County Sheriff's Maj. Bryan Keeling.
Authorities declined to release the victims' names.
A Cobb County woman was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday in the torching death of her friend.
Anjail Muhammad was given life without the possibility of parole. A jury found her guilty last week of murder and arson in the death of her friend Nodiana Antoine in 2003.
Authorities said Muhammad and Antoine had been arguing at a gas station on May 25, 2003, when Muhammed sprayed Antoine with gasoline and set her on fire. Antoine died about six weeks later at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta
Guns stolen in Cobb now in black market, police fear
Seventy-five stolen guns probably are moving through metro Atlanta's underground, police fear.
They include 66 handguns, seven assault rifles and two shotguns, all taken in a burglary last week at a Cobb County gun shop, police said.
"There is a very big concern that these weapons are out there on the street," said Sgt. Dana Pierce, a spokesman for the Cobb County Police Department.
Smyrna's Police Explorers took first place in a recent statewide competition, the third year in a row.
The Police Explorers program is part of Learning for Life, a division of the Boy Scouts of America. The program gives young people, ages 14 to 21, a chance to learn more about careers in law enforcement.
The competition allows them to test their skills against other explorers in the state, said Lt. Tony Leonard, the adviser to the Smyrna Police Explorers Post 217 and executive director of the Law Enforcement Explorers Association of Georgia.
The ban on outdoor burning starts again on Thursday in Cobb County.
The prohibition resumes with the state's burning ban, which begins Thursday and typically runs through Sept. 30, although it has been extended occasionally because of drought conditions.
Cobb has permitted outdoor burning since March 1, but it was set to end when the seasonal state prohibition resumed.
Marietta man charged with assault after trying to run over cop
A career burglar faces multiple charges after he tried to run over a Marietta police officer only six weeks after being released from jail, authorities said.
Jason McTaggert, 35, of Marietta, has been charged with aggravated assault and four counts of burglary.
Kennesaw named its new police chief this week — William E. Westenberger, who had been acting chief since February.
That's when then-Chief Tim Callahan resigned after crashing his city-issued cruiser. Callahan was named chief in December 2002. His resignation from the $81,452-a-year-job was effective April 1.
Westenberger said he hopes to strengthen relationships between the police department and Kennesaw's residents and business community.
A self-proclaimed self-help therapist who is charged with sexually targeting adults and children in Gwinnett County has now been charged by Cobb County Police.
Carmine Baffa has toured the country giving seminars on "human performance engineering". The seminars were initially named Mindsight.
Cobb County Police say that Baffa has been holding seminars at a Cobb County hotel from October 1, 2006 to March 17, 2008. According to a criminal warrant obtained by 11Alive News, the hotel is the Doubletree on South Park Place near I-75 and Windy Hill Road.
