I know how they are setup for the most part, but I have heard some things not listed on the units number page.

For example, a zone unit with a letter at the end, like 4316A etc.
Would those be units that have 2 officers in the car?

Also, how are the STEP unit numbers setup, is there any relation to the regular zone units? Is there any way to tell the general area of the county that they are in based on their number?

Units with an "A" or any other letter at the end indicate that there is more than one unit in that particular beat. These are most commonly seen in zone 4, 14 and 16 beats, and in zone 2 in almost every beat, manpower permitting. This reduces the need to send back up units from another beat, and provides quicker response and back up times. So, for example, you might hear 2310 and 2310A responding to the same call, or 2310A and 2310B -- the letter is just a way to differentiate units in the same beat.

STEP unit numbers are set up to indicate division, not location, as all of the Special Operations units float around the county based on specific details, assignments, and strategic areas. The breakdown is this:

First Number (7) indicates special ops
Second Number (1-9) indicates division (Traffic, Motors, K9, etc)
Third & Fourth #s (1-10) indicates unit number

Thanks for the info, so have they sorta gone away from just having some extra zone units roam the zone and not be assigned to a specific beat? (Hence the need for the letters)

Sounds like they don't always use A either, just depends I guess?

Usually, the letter after the unit identifier is the first letter of the last name of the officer in the car.

Rmiller - Yes. I have heard varying explanations as to why, but it is, in my opinion, somewhat more effective to have their areas of responsibility more clearly defined that the "xx51, xx52" etc "center" cars.

Firefighter59 - I certainly will not question your credibility, and never intend any comment as personal. However, you are simply incorrect with your information. While Zone 4 tends to be a great deal more varied in the letters they use (I recall an occassion where the units were 4314O and 4314Z - so that the schedule read "OZ") than the standard "A" "B" used by other precincts, I have never seen any unit identifier that was consistant, in any way, with the name of the officer.

I thought EC was a Cobb County dispatcher.

Thanks for the info, but I got another question.

For the 7xxx units, what is the breakdown as far as what the 2nd number indicates.

ie are all 71xx units STEP units 72xx units SWAT, K9 etc?

Firefighter - I'm not; given your screenname, are you? Smile Ease up man - I assure you I'm quite qualified to opine on the issue here.

Here's the list:

71xx STEP - Traffic Officers and Accident Investigators
72xx DUI Taskforce Units
73xx TAC (Full time SWAT) Units. CAGE Units were also included here, but they now fall under Organized Crime
74xx Motor Units
75xx K9 Units and Quality of Life Units
76xx Hit and Run Investigators
77xx VIPER Units - Violent Incident Prevention and Early Response
78xx Ranger Units
79xx Animal Control and (I think) some of the Academy training staff.

Thanks EC!

I had wondered about the SWAT units since I have seen some cars that have SWAT instead of s precinct number and I think I have seen some units marked as a STEP unit but have a SWAT plate on the front of the car.

Got some more unit number questions.

After the triple shooting tonight, heard some 68xx units going to the scene, are they detectives? Think I have heard some 64xx or 62xx numbers too.

Also hear some 16xx unit numbers.
